Chelan County's data center story is Microsoft's campus in Malaga, south of Wenatchee, which is operating and expanding. The Chelan County Public Utility District approved Microsoft's master power supply agreement in June 2025, under which the PUD would help provide up to 288 megawatts of power from 2026 to 2040, from a power source still to be determined; Microsoft has said it will buy that power from a third-party supplier rather than the PUD's own hydropower. The campus sits on land the PUD's substation, Jumpoff Ridge, was built specifically to serve.
The campus has also driven a tax fight between local governments. In 2025 the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority proposed a 3,326-acre tax increment financing district in Malaga covering the Microsoft site, which would redirect up to $154 million over 25 years to local projects; County Commissioner Shon Smith estimated the county would instead lose $50 million and said "99% of the comments were not in favor of a TIF in Malaga." Chelan County imposed a moratorium on new tax districts and sued the port, and Douglas County Superior Court granted the port a preliminary injunction against that moratorium in November 2025. The port approved the district anyway, 2-1, on December 23, 2025.
The two sides have since been thawing. Fire Chief Brian Brett said Microsoft agreed to fund staffing at the Malaga fire station through 2027 as part of the deal, and on September 18, 2026 the remodeled station, paid for with $1.5 million from Microsoft, reopened with a public celebration that included a tour of Microsoft's first Malaga data center. A revenue-sharing agreement between the county and the port remained unsigned as of March 2026, with litigation still pending on both sides.
