Convergent Technology Park data center, Remington, Virginia

Convergent VA, LLC withdrew its rezoning application for the Convergent Technology Park, a data center campus planned on nearly 140 acres south of Remington in Fauquier County, Virginia, in late August 2026, and says it will build houses on the land instead. "Please be advised that we are withdrawing the above-stated rezoning application", Convergent VA manager Jeffrey Price wrote to the county, "and pursuing the by-right residential development of the property pursuant to its underlying residentially-zoned use."

The land, two parcels south of the intersection of James Madison Highway (Route 15/29) and James Madison Street, has carried approval for a 198-home subdivision since 2003. The latest rezoning application asked to make about 104 acres a business park for roughly 1.584 million square feet of data center and office space, with about 35 acres for passive recreation; an earlier 2024 version called for four data center buildings costing more than $1 billion, needing 240 megawatts of power and up to 16 diesel generators per building set back 440 feet behind 12-foot berms.

Scott District Supervisor Ike Broaddus said the withdrawal was "no surprise": "They've known for more than a year that they had no chance of approval for a data center." It was one of three Remington-area data center applications withdrawn within a month: Gigaland pulled its application on August 17 for the second time, and on September 17 the Remington Innovation Campus, backed by SDC Capital Partners and including land owned by Lee District Supervisor Daron Culbertson, was withdrawn hours before the Planning Commission was to consider it.

On September 17 the Fauquier County Planning Commission unanimously recommended removing data centers as a permitted use in business park zones, limiting new ones to the Vint Hill area and requiring a special exception from the Board of Supervisors for each; county staff concluded there are "no appropriate areas for data center development" outside that district. That zoning change goes to the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors for a final vote, with no date yet set, while the Convergent land now proceeds as a by-right residential subdivision that needs no rezoning.
