Pumpkin Tech Campus data center, Harlem, Georgia

The Pumpkin Technology Campus, also called the Pumpkin Center data center or Project Pumpkin, is a 420-acre data center site near Harlem in Columbia County, Georgia. Applicant Piedmont DevCo LLC, backed by Cloverleaf Infrastructure, plans four data center buildings, two warehouses and a substation on land owned by the Prather family. Columbia County commissioners approved the rezoning 4-1 on February 3, 2026, over the strongest opposition of any of the county's three data center proposals.

Greenpoint residents say they bought homes near the site expecting shops and restaurants, as the original development plans showed. "There's a place for a data center. It's not in a residential area," resident Kyle Brucks told WRDW before the vote. A change.org petition against the campus had 195 signatures in January, with residents citing utility costs, environmental harm and the character of the area.

Commissioner Allison Couch cast the lone vote against the rezoning. The approval carries conditions: a 500-foot natural buffer along Highway 221 and Wrightsboro Road with a 12-foot berm planted with evergreens, a 65-decibel noise limit at the property line, and a requirement that the owners remove residential uses planned for the east side of Highway 221.

Approval did not clear the way to build right away. In February the county sent back the site plan with reviewers' comments. "They have the ability to go disturb the land. They don't have the ability to build anything yet," County Manager Scott Johnson said. Building plans still have to pass county staff review, and Georgia Power is studying the approved projects.

Greenpoint resident Gregory P. Guido Jr. sued on February 25, arguing the rezoning was approved despite an incomplete state regional impact review and without timely notice to the school district. "I felt like the only way to actually do this was to file a lawsuit," Guido said. A Superior Court judge dismissed the case on March 25, and Guido filed a notice of appeal to the Georgia Court of Appeals on April 13.

The Pumpkin site should not be confused with Project Squash, a separate, roughly 325-acre data center site about a mile west at 6423 Wrightsboro Road. State filings from May 2026 name Whiting-Turner as Project Squash's contractor, with land clearing expected to finish in 2027; it is a different project from the Pumpkin Technology Campus.
