Webb Data Center, Reno, Nevada

The Webb Data Center, the first data center the City of Reno approved, is under construction at 9710-9730 North Virginia Street in the North Valleys of Reno, in Washoe County, Nevada, next to an Amazon warehouse off North Virginia Street and Stead Boulevard. Its developer is the California-based company Ellis Partners, and the city puts the 82,000-square-foot building's needs at 28.5 megawatts of power and 2 acre-feet of water a year, about enough power for 11,400 homes by the city's own comparison. The project has its building permits and is under construction.

Webb was contested from the start: the Reno Planning Commission granted it a conditional use permit in December 2024, and the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter appealed, arguing the city had added data centers to its zoning without public input. "The folks who live nearby this data center never had an opportunity to comment on ... the permitting of data centers," said Olivia Tanager, the chapter's director. In January 2025 the Reno City Council upheld the permit 5-2, with council members Meghan Ebert and Naomi Duerr voting no; Duerr said the developer needed to do more to reduce environmental effects in what has been called the fastest-warming city in the nation.

In March 2025 the council unanimously overturned the planning commission's denial of the Oppidan Data Center next door, which plans to use 8 acre-feet of water and 8 megawatts; Mayor Hillary Schieve said then that she wished data center applications were not coming so quickly.

Reno has since stopped taking new data center applications: on June 1, 2026 the council voted 6-1 to keep a moratorium on accepting, processing and approving new applications until August 31, 2027, or until the city adopts new data center rules, with Councilmember Kathleen Taylor voting no. Data centers already built or being built, including Webb, are not affected, so the pause does not reach this project. "My community does not have trust that this body will follow through on any promises," said Ebert, who pushed to tie the end of the moratorium to the adoption of new rules. The Reno City Council will decide the new rules on energy use, water, noise and air quality that the pause is meant to lead to.
