The Community of Madrid's government says 56 data center projects are in the pipeline in the region: 15 under construction and 41 designed, worth about €15 billion. Many of the operating sites are in Alcobendas, north of the city, where Data4 runs a 50-megawatt campus and CyrusOne an 18-megawatt building, and in the city itself, where Digital Realty has buildings on Calle Albasanz.
Telefónica's Alcalá CDG data center on the edge of Madrid, built in 2013, has 23 data halls and up to 100 megawatts of power. Google opened its first Spanish cloud region in Madrid in May 2022 with Telefónica as partner, without saying which buildings it uses; Microsoft and Oracle also announced Madrid cloud regions with Telefónica.
Madrid's regional government has formally objected to a draft national decree that would make data centers match most of their power use with new renewable plants as a condition of grid access. It argued that crowded power lines should be fixed by reinforcing the grid rather than by limiting investment, and that the rules would add legal uncertainty for projects already in process.
