Marshall County's data centers are two Bitcoin mines near Calvert City, not new AI campuses. The larger, run by Core Scientific, converted the former Gerdau steel rolling mill on Shar-Cal Road into a data center operating since 2019, with 150 megawatts of power capacity, according to the Kentucky Lantern. When it opened, the Paducah Sun reported about 30 employees on site; Core Scientific's chief administrative officer, Matthew Bishop, said highly reliable power from the nearby Tennessee Valley Authority gas turbine plant and from Jackson Purchase Energy was one of the main reasons for the location.
Riot Platforms, another Bitcoin mining company, has run a second, 25-megawatt site near Calvert City since it bought the facility from another miner in 2024, the Kentucky Lantern's statewide survey of data center projects found.
