Data centers in Pickaway County, Ohio: 3 projects mapped

Pickaway County, just south of Columbus, has three data center fights under way, and in each one residents have gone to law. The furthest along is in Ashville, where EdgeConneX plans two data centers and a natural gas power plant on about 195 acres of village property. On April 6, 2026 the village council approved a term sheet with the company as an emergency measure, which took effect immediately and exempted the project from Ashville's own data center moratorium. Residents gathered signatures for a referendum; the village's fiscal officer refused to certify them, and on August 7 the Ohio Supreme Court ruled unanimously that she had to, because the council gave no specific reason for the emergency. On August 24 the county Board of Elections voted 4-0 that the resolution was legislative, putting it on the November 3 ballot for village voters. "I think it's really terrific that the Ohio Supreme Court unanimously stood up and enforced the constitutional right that citizens have to a referendum," said former Attorney General Marc Dann, who represents the opposition group Data Center Resistance.

In Commercial Point, the village rezoned about 267 acres in May 2024 exclusively for data centers, on a 4-1 vote to waive the three-reading rule with one council seat vacant. In April 2026 the developer, K-Nova II, filed a site plan naming Amazon Data Services as the end user, under the name Project Cosmos, and paid a $534,121.85 application fee. After residents pushed back, the council passed a retroactive 18-month moratorium on May 4 and offered the fee back. K-Nova refused and asked the Ohio Supreme Court to force a vote, while residents sued on the last day of the two-year limit, arguing five votes were needed to waive the readings and the zoning is void.

In Muhlenberg Township, after Pacifico Energy requested a rezoning for a data center and power plant, the trustees passed a 12-month moratorium on data center zoning certificates to applause in February 2026. Residents there worry about heated cooling water reaching Big Darby Creek, a state scenic river, and the Charles O. Trump Wildlife Area.
