Data centers in Canadian County, Oklahoma: 2 projects mapped

Piedmont's city council is deciding whether to let Cloverleaf Infrastructure build a six-building, roughly 1,033-acre data center campus called Project Open Sky north of the city, between Azalea, Richland and Moffat roads. Cloverleaf, a company that buys and prepares land for data centers, wants to annex and rezone the site for six buildings of about 352,800 square feet each, warehouses, and an electrical substation, equipment that steps power down for the campus. The council delayed its vote once already and was scheduled to take it up September 28, 2026; no result has been published yet.

Cloverleaf says the project means more than $1 billion in taxable investment, over 1,000 construction jobs and at least 50 permanent ones, and that it will pay for any power, water or transmission upgrades so other customers' rates don't rise. It says it signs no non-disclosure agreements and will use closed-loop cooling, drawing office-building levels of water after an initial fill. Residents have objected to noise, water use, power generation and the loss of the area's rural character, and have petitioned for anything from an 18-month pause to a permanent ban. In response, Cloverleaf agreed to follow the city's noise ordinance, dropped plans to drill water wells, and removed an on-site power plant from the plan.

In August, Cloverleaf said it had also secured options on about 337 acres in neighboring Kingfisher County next to the site, calling it another path forward whatever Piedmont decides. Canadian County's other project, a bitcoin mine Athlon Blockchain Technology ran in El Reno, has been shut down since September: the city condemned it after a burst private water line lost about 3.8 million gallons and forced two days of school closures. Athlon cannot reopen until it resolves code violations dating to a 2023 stop-work order.
