Data centers in Mercer County, Pennsylvania: 1 project mapped
Mercer County's first large data center is planned on the site of an old Westinghouse Electric plant in Sharon, and it has moved through local approvals with little opposition. Keel Infrastructure, the New York company known as Bitfarms until 2026, bought the Clark Street property in October 2025 and ran a bitcoin mining operation there until shutting it down on June 29, 2026 ahead of converting to AI. It plans an AI data center of about 110 megawatts on 17 to 18 acres behind the former factory, with two 80-megawatt substations due by the end of 2026. "It's by far the largest investment in Sharon's history," chief operating officer Liam Wilson told the Sharon Herald.
The company has given different investment figures at different meetings: about $1.5 billion at an early April 2026 session in Hermitage, and $4 billion to $5 billion a week later in Sharon. Keel says it will hire 134 full-time staff for at least 20 years, about 40 of them from Sharon, with pay starting above $60,000, plus about 1,300 construction jobs. City Manager Bob Fiscus cited about $7 million in tax revenue from the project. "It seems like a win for us," he said.

Residents asked about power, water and noise. Keel says closed-loop cooling will hold water use under 1,000 gallons a day and it will spend $40 million upgrading power systems, though Wilson could not promise anything about residents' own electric bills. The Sharon Herald's editorial board noted that a much smaller 16-megawatt warehouse project nearby had already been delayed about 30 months by FirstEnergy for power capacity. Sharon's zoning board approved the project in late April with a 70-decibel noise limit and a ban on drawing water from the river, and the city council approved final land development plans on July 15.
Mercer County adopted new countywide data center rules in July, covering noise, water, cooling, emergency planning and decommissioning, though the Sharon project is grandfathered out of them. "If you want to come to Mercer County, we do want to remain rural," said planning director Doniele Russell. Keel has said it will start building and hiring before the end of 2026 and hopes to begin operating in late 2027. Sharon City Council held a special meeting on August 19, 2026 on a new citywide data center zoning ordinance; no result has been published.
