Iron Mountain Data Center, Taylor, Texas

Iron Mountain is planning a data center campus called Taylor Meadows on about 500 acres on CR 404, just south of Samsung's chip plant, in Taylor's extraterritorial jurisdiction in Williamson County near Hutto, Texas. The proposed campus would have seven buildings, an electric substation and a retention pond, and Iron Mountain has asked the City of Hutto for sewer service in exchange for funding city projects. The Hutto City Council heard the pitch on March 12, 2026, and no further city action has been reported since.

The land was part of a tract once approved for nearly 1,900 homes, whose developer will now build a smaller subdivision on the rest. Iron Mountain estimates the seven buildings would need about 30,200 gallons a day of sewer service, less than the homes would have used, because it plans a recycled closed-loop cooling system. "So really, the domestic water demand is limited to just toilets and sinks at that point," said Steven Walton, Iron Mountain's director of site selection.

Walton said the facility does not intend to annex into any city, so it would pay no city property tax to Taylor or Hutto. Hutto's leaders were wary of serving a campus that would pay them no property tax. "Data centers are not popular with the people, for the large part," Mayor Pro Tem Dan Thornton said, adding that without property tax from the site, "I'm having a hard time making that case."

City Manager James Earp said he would look into whether Iron Mountain could make a payment the city could use for debt service and lower tax or utility rates instead. Eastern Williamson County has become a data center hub because of the power infrastructure built for Samsung's plant; about 30 data centers are operating or proposed in the county, including 14 on three campuses in Taylor.

Iron Mountain's would be the second project planned for the corridor around Samsung, after developer KDR's Project Comal on 210 acres nearby. Hutto has not set a date to decide on sewer service; because the site sits outside both Hutto and Taylor, neither city would collect property tax from it regardless of the outcome.
