Sabey Data Centers is building a $4.3 billion data center campus on 130 acres at 6400 Kentucky Ave. in Decatur Township, on the southwest side of Indianapolis in Marion County. It will have two buildings totaling 1,062,500 square feet and an on-site substation able to supply up to 250 megawatts of power. On September 16 the Metropolitan Development Commission approved more than $240 million in tax breaks for it, and Sabey expects to finish construction by 2031.

The commission approved the plan in March after months of objections over noise, power, water, jobs and home values. Because Sabey asked only for variances, not a full rezoning, the district's city-county councilor could not call the vote to the council. "It does not belong in the middle of these residences," said Pat Andrews of the Decatur Township Civic Council. Andrews and other residents are suing to block the project.

The tax breaks cut real estate taxes 60% over 10 years, passed 6-1, and equipment taxes 90% over 15 years, passed 5-2. Sabey and its tenant will still pay nearly $53 million in taxes during those periods, and Decatur Township Schools will get $31 million over 15 years. The company says it will create 75 jobs averaging $50 an hour, use a closed-loop cooling system and pay $5 million for road improvements.
