Compass Datacenters data centers: 20 sites mapped

Compass Datacenters is expanding in Red Oak, Texas, over organized opposition. In May 2026 the city council voted 4-1, late at night, to rezone about 830 acres of farmland into a planned "high tech industrial park" for what would be the city's sixth Compass campus. Residents packed city hall, citing noise, traffic and how close the site would sit to homes. "We're supposed to look out for the welfare of our people," said organizer Elda Jazmin Villegas. Her group, now renamed Save Our Red Oak, is raising money through car shows for a legal challenge.

In June 2026, Ellis County accepted a $15 million donation from Compass for a new county animal shelter, and Compass gave Texas State Technical College $12.6 million for a data center training building. Some residents questioned the gifts' timing. "I hate to think that we're going to be obligated to Compass," said Waxahachie resident Susie Hall; County Judge John Wray said the donations carry no obligations. A tax abatement for Compass's 890-acre property was withdrawn before the June 23 commissioners meeting, which founder and chief executive Chris Crosby attributed to public "noise."

In Mississippi, Compass is building a $10 billion hyperscale complex in Lauderdale County, near Meridian. The Center for Economic Accountability, a Michigan nonprofit, named it the worst economic development deal of 2025. "There's a lot of bad, dumb data center deals out there, and Mississippi became pretty clearly a standout," said the center's president, John Mozena.
