Microsoft is building two data centers for its Finnish cloud region, one in Espoo and one in Kirkkonummi, which are to come online step by step from 2027. Prime Data Centers is targeting a 12-hectare site in Järvenpää, about 40 kilometers north of Helsinki, for a campus of up to 130 megawatts of computer power; the company says construction can start once it has environmental approval. Nebius runs a data center in Mäntsälä, and atNorth, Equinix and others run older sites around Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa.
The Microsoft sites are tied to the local heating system. In May 2026 the energy company Fortum started two heat pump plants, at Kolabacken in Kirkkonummi and Hepokorpi in Espoo, that will take the data centers' waste heat and feed it into district heating; until then they run on air-source heat pumps and electric boilers. Fortum says data center heat should eventually cover about 40 percent of the heat used each year by 250,000 customers in the area.
Power is tight around the capital. The national grid operator, Fingrid, has limited new connections for users larger than 10 megawatts around Helsinki until 2027 while it expands the grid. One company that looked at a plot of about 300 megawatts in Helsinki pulled out, a CBRE adviser told Data Center Dynamics, warning of oversupply before much of the announced capacity is close to coming online.
