Data centers in LaPorte County, Indiana: 2 projects mapped
LaPorte County's data center story is Microsoft's, and it is centered on the city of La Porte. In 2024 the company announced a 245,000-square-foot data center on 489 acres at the Radius Industrial Park as part of a $1 billion investment in Northwest Indiana. Site preparation began in March 2026; Microsoft told an April 21 community meeting the first buildings would be worked on through the end of 2027 and completed in 2029. At the same meeting it showed a draft plan to expand the site to 17 buildings, seeking to rezone adjacent property.
In May, the La Porte Common Council voted unanimously to annex about 1,000 more acres of farmland and rezone it light industrial, bringing the campus to about 1,300 acres near U.S. 35 and State Road 4. Microsoft told the council it would cover infrastructure costs so residents' electric bills would stay the same, and pointed to a $1 million payment to La Porte schools. Not everyone was consulted: County Commissioner Joe Haney told WNDU the county learned of the annexation from a newspaper notice. "They just published in the newspaper. And that's how we found out about it that day," he said.

The county has since written its own rules for land outside the cities. On May 6, the county commissioners unanimously adopted a data center ordinance limiting data centers to industrial zones and setting standards for setbacks, noise and fire department training. Commissioner Steve Holifield called it only the second standalone data center ordinance in Indiana. Commissioner Connie Gramarossa said the right place for one in the unincorporated county was the Kingsbury Industrial Park, "not something that we want next to somebody's home."
The county's other city is also building one: Google has taken over the Project Maize data center campus planned for Michigan City. Nearby, Microsoft has bought 939 acres in Mishawaka and is pursuing a separate project in Granger, and Amazon Web Services has announced $11 billion for St. Joseph County. Construction of the La Porte campus continues toward its 2029 target, and the county's data center committee is expected to bring back further rule changes.
