Kansas-based Diode Ventures withdrew its proposal for a data center in Henderson County in July 2026, months after residents around Cedar Creek Lake organized against it. The site sat west of the lake between Trinidad and Tool, according to West Cedar Creek Municipal Utility District records obtained by the Fort Worth Report. Cedar Creek Reservoir is owned by the Tarrant Regional Water District and is one of two East Texas lakes that supply most of the raw water for Fort Worth, Arlington and other North Texas cities.

Water was the core of the dispute. In December 2025 emails with the utility district, a Diode project development manager said the project would need between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water per day, the Fort Worth Report found. A Diode spokesperson said that projection did not mean that much would ultimately be used. Records showed the rural utility projected pumping just under 1.5 million gallons a day in 2025 for about 22,400 customers. On May 21, 2026, the utility district approved a temporary suspension of "high-intensity water service commitments" that runs through April 1, 2027. The Tarrant Regional Water District said Diode's application for raw water was incomplete.

In May 2026 more than 200 people packed a Henderson County Commissioners Court meeting in Athens, KLTV reported, and about thirty spoke, all against the data center. "It's a water issue. it's a property value issue. it is a local control issue," said Ashley Cook of Trinidad. Commissioners then adopted a resolution opposing open-loop evaporative cooling in water-constrained regions and calling for enforceable safeguards on grid reliability and ratepayer costs. "This is not a vote approving or denying any specific project today," Pct. 1 Commissioner Wendy Spivey said. Texas counties have no zoning authority. "There's not much the county can do," Spivey later told The Texas Tribune. "We don't have zoning rules and regulations."

Diode told the Tribune it had "determined not to advance the site beyond preliminary planning." Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement, "Data centers that want to do business in Texas must meet a clear standard. This project did not." The volunteer coalition Save Cedar Creek Lake had gathered thousands of petition signatures. Spivey called the withdrawal "a big, big step in a positive direction" but warned that the landowners are still looking for ways to sell or use the land and that another data center developer could come in.
