The largest data center project underway in the Osaka area sits on the old Sharp LCD panel plant in Sakai, south of Osaka city. KDDI bought part of the site and started running its Osaka Sakai Data Center on January 22, 2026, a four-story building finished in about six months, DatacenterDynamics reported. SoftBank bought the rest of the site and is building its own data center there, which it has said could grow to 400 megawatts.
North of the city, Vantage Data Centers is building a two-building, 68-megawatt campus called KIX1; it said in 2024 that the first 28-megawatt building would open in early 2026, but no opening has since been announced. AirTrunk, owned by Blackstone and Canada's CPPIB, runs a 20-megawatt building in nearby Amagasaki and said in December 2025 it plans a second, up to 100 megawatts, in east Osaka, with no delivery date given. No organized local opposition to any of these projects has been reported.
Osaka's other tracked sites, run by Equinix, NTT, Google, MC Digital Realty and CloudHQ, are already operating or under construction in Osaka city and Ibaraki.
