Data centers in Lamar County, Georgia: 1 project mapped

Amazon Web Services bought about 985 acres along Interstate 75, off High Falls Road, in July 2025 for $270 million as a possible data center site, but so far it has only bought the land. County Commission Chairman Ryran Traylor said the next step would be for Amazon to "come before our planning and zoning director." Lamar County adopted a moratorium on data centers in September 2025 while it rewrites its zoning code.

The land has been zoned industrial for about 20 years, Traylor said. "The big concern is that yes, this could be a big project that would financially take some burden off the people in our community but also that it's the least impactful on the neighbors that are around," he told WGXA. Barnesville resident Makalyn McGuire said a data center would cause pollution and harm wildlife at nearby High Falls State Park.

Planning and zoning director Anita Buice told Georgia Public Broadcasting the moratorium was less about data centers than an old code: "Our code does not currently have the term 'data center' in it," she said, and the county's commercial and industrial rules "have not been updated since 2010." Any Amazon plan would go to the planning and zoning director first; McGuire urged neighbors to "look for those public hearings, the commissioner's public hearings, and come out."
