Data centers in Spalding County, Georgia: 4 projects mapped
Spalding County, around Griffin an hour south of Atlanta, approved three data center campuses between July 2025 and January 2026. The largest, approved unanimously on January 22, is Wallace Jackson LLC's 190-acre, $3.9 billion campus of ten buildings along Interstate 75. Two lawsuits challenge that approval, and resident Gregory Berns objected that it was "taking precious land that people have lived here for generations to farm" for a project "that's not going to provide any jobs of substance."
By August 2026 none of the three approved projects had applied for a land disturbance permit, and a fourth, 75 South, had been withdrawn for good. Commissioner James Dutton credits the county's own rules: data centers here must use closed-loop cooling, capped at about 25,000 gallons a day. "Because our rules are so high, you'll notice that there are no data centers in Spalding County," he said, contrasting it with neighboring Butts County, which he said "is going to give away the farm."
Griffin's water is still going to data centers elsewhere. In March 2026 Dutton objected that the city had agreed to supply Henry County's Hampton with up to 5 million gallons a day for a project that would not use closed-loop cooling. "Five million times 365 days is 1.7 billion gallons of water a year!" he said.
