Amazon Web Services is building a large data center off Alcovy Road near Highway 142 in Covington, and Meta has run a data center campus at Stanton Springs since breaking ground in 2018. A third campus, the Gregory Road Data Center, would put up to 1.41 million square feet of buildings on about 213 acres just south of Lake Varner, the county's drinking water reservoir and needs Covington to annex the land first. Newton County's pause on new data center applications runs until October 7, 2026.

Amazon is paying for a water reuse plant, estimated at about $180 million, that the city will own, and will make more than $300 million in payments in place of property taxes through 2041, plus about $215 million in electricity franchise fees to Covington. In July 2026 the city halted work at the Amazon site after runoff from a detention pond "discharged turbid water above the allowed limits"; the order was later lifted with conditions.

On Hazelbrand Road in Covington, Serverfarm is building a data center powered by VoltaGrid's 90-megawatt gas-fired plant next door. State environmental regulators cited both companies on July 2, 2026, for starting construction before they had air permits, and ordered VoltaGrid to stop building its engines. "Covington and Newton County communities deserve transparency, accountability, and a voice," said Maurice Carter of Sustainable Newton.

County rules allow data centers only in the Stanton Springs area, so developers have asked cities to annex land instead; Covington refused one such request, a 1,500-acre site on Elks Club Road, in January. Covington paused data center requests on January 20 and lifted the pause on August 31, after adopting rules that allow the largest data centers only in heavy industrial zones with a special permit and a buffer of at least 250 feet from homes. The county's own pause, set on February 17 and extended twice, ends October 7 unless commissioners extend it again.
