Data centers in Storey County, Nevada: 9 projects mapped

Storey County is home to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center east of Reno, a business park bigger than the city of Reno and one of the densest data center clusters in the country. Switch's Citadel Campus, one of the largest data centers in the United States, anchors the park, alongside Tract's South Valley Technology Park, PowerHouse Data Centers, EdgeCore, Novva, Vantage and Google. Nevada created its data center tax break in 2015 to bring Switch to the county, and three-quarters of the $461 million in expected breaks the state has since awarded has gone to Storey County projects.

Now the county wants the program cut back. In September 2026 it sent the Legislature a proposal to shorten the abatements, a 75 percent break on personal property tax and a reduced 2 percent sales tax rate, from 10 or 20 years to five or 10; to double the spending commitments companies must meet; to require audits at five and 10 years; to publish each data center's projected and actual power and water use; and to bar breaks for data centers on federal land. "There's benefits to them," said Will Adler, the county's lobbyist. "Modifications really are what this program needs." State Sen. Dina Neal has separately proposed ending the program and pausing new data centers statewide.

Water is the other pressure. Erik Henzl of the Desert Research Institute estimates that by 2033 the power generation serving the park's data centers could need nearly 12,450 acre-feet of water a year, and direct cooling about 9,600 more. The park's water district holds rights to more than 4 billion gallons a year, including Truckee River water. "We're making sure that customers have the water resources before they're breaking ground," said its general manager, Shari Whalen. "The plan is not to take all the water there is in the Truckee River."
