Selangor approved 39 data center projects between 2021 and 2025, and several large ones are being built now. Google said in August 2026 that its $2 billion data center at Elmina Business Park should open within nine months, and Vantage is building its KUL2 campus in Cyberjaya, which it says will offer 436 megawatts of power when complete. On September 8, 2026, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said no data center will be approved without guaranteed water and electricity.
Residents in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, stopped one plan this summer. A proposed three-story data center on Jalan Rimba Riang 9/6 in Section 9 drew about 290 formal objections, including one from a coalition of more than 500 households worried about noise, round-the-clock operation, heat and traffic. The developer's consultant withdrew the application on July 28, 2026, to rethink the site, the city council said. "Thank you to all KD people," assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim posted.
Water is the main worry. Any project expected to use more than two million liters a day must now file a detailed water study, and developers must lay their own supply pipes and store three days of water on site. The state says Air Selangor has spare capacity and that the Rasau scheme will add 350 million liters a day, rising to 700 million when its first phase is finished.
