Data centers in Chesterfield County, Virginia: 5 projects mapped

Chesterfield County has decided it has enough data centers. "If someone wants to do a data center moving forward, they're going to have to come before the board of supervisors," Deputy County Administrator Jesse Smith said in August 2026. "From a staff perspective, I think we would not recommend folks do that at this point. The board has indicated they don't have an appetite for these." Since the start of 2026 every data center has needed a conditional use permit, and the county counts at least 10 data center buildings already built or under construction. One of those already running is CoreWeave's 82-megawatt facility in Chester, built by Chirisa Technology Parks; PowerHouse Data Centers also has a project there, on Digital Drive, with no power figure made public yet.

Most of what is coming is Google's. It is building Project Peanut on 300-plus acres at 2700 Bermuda Hundred Road next to Meadowville Technology Park, where construction began this year; the first building is due in late 2027. Project Skye, four buildings on about 850 acres on Moseley Road, and Project Loch, three buildings on about 350 acres on Watkins Centre Parkway, were rezoned in 2025 without Google being named. Together they are a $9 billion investment that the county projects will bring $31 million to $47 million a year, with a combined maximum water use of 8.6 million gallons a day. Google's filings show Skye would permanently affect more than 20 acres of wetlands and about 8,000 feet of streams. Supervisor Jessica Schneider, who voted for Skye and Loch, blamed nondisclosure agreements for the secrecy and said the county's 24-cent computer equipment tax rate is "the lowest in the whole state"; she said she would vote for no more. University of Richmond professor Mary Finley-Brook, who lives in the county, said "it was actually happening in my own community, and I didn't know because of a nondisclosure agreement".

In February the State Corporation Commission approved Dominion Energy's seven miles of overhead 230-kilovolt lines through western Chesterfield, including 1.5 miles along the Hallsley subdivision, to serve growth including a planned Google data center; residents had asked for them to be buried. In August 2026 the supervisors deferred a vote on an ordinance to use data center tax revenue to offset a lower personal property tax rate on cars, trucks and motorcycles, saying they wanted more time to study it and hear from the public.
